MBA concerned at commercial use of bothies

The Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) has issued a reminder to commercial organisations that they must not use bothies that are maintained by the Association without first securing the consent of the owner. The MBA maintain a number of buildings in remote areas for use as shelters open to all. These buildings do not belong to the MBA, they remain in private ownership. From time to time, there is evidence, either in the form of actual use or in advertising, that some of these bothies are being used by commercial organisations as overnight accommodation for their clients. Such use is not

The Scottish SPCA is appealing to walkers not to approach or touch any seal pups they find on beaches at this time of year. The warning follows the rescue of a newborn grey seal pup found starving on a Fife beach after its mother had been frightened off. The Scottish SPCA said people cause more harm than good by picking up or approaching seal pups, as it often causes their mothers to abandon them. Cairns moved on Ben Nevis

Following consultations with mountaineering organisations, The Nevis Partnership has completed work on the relocation of the line of stone cairns that traditionally marked the path over the summit plateau of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. The relocated cairns now mark the recognised compass bearings that are used by walkers and climbers to navigate off the summit, avoiding the snow cornices that fringe the edge of the mountain’s north-east facing corries. The cairns are 1.8 metres in height and are spaced at 50 metre intervals. Previously a line of poles placed by Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team marked this route. These
