The National Trust for Scotland’s Mar Lodge Estate, near Braemar, makes a great backdrop to the event. The organisers of next year’s event say the festival will feature six epic films which showcase mountain landscapes, extreme ascents in far flung corners of the world and the stories of the people who visit them.

Friday the 10th February is an ‘Explore’ night and will feature The Last Great Climb, a mountain epic depicting Leo Houlding and his team’s attempt at a first ascent of the Ulvetanna peak in the stunning mountains of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. This will be followed by North of the Sun, a film about two Norwegian surfers and snowboarders who spent nine months exploring and surviving on a remote arctic island, which holds some of the world’s finest surfing waves. The final film for Friday is another exciting film by Peter Mackenzie called Maybe bringing us more extreme skiing from Scotland, this time some of the steepest and most dramatic gullies in the Nevis Range.

The ‘Extreme’ night on Saturday 11th February firstly follows a small group of extraordinary mountain runners running across the snow-covered Alps in the film Summits of my Life. The second film is the award winning recent release A Line Across the Sky, featuring renowned Yosemite climbers Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell’s successful first traverse of the Fitzroy Massif in Patagonia, a feat considered until recently to be impossible. The film night will end following Fara Oritz’s dream to kayak over the Niagara Falls in the spectacular film Chasing Niagara.

Tickets are available from the Braemar Mountain Shop, Ballater Outdoor Store and Mar Lodge ranger base. Adults £10/£16 for both nights, children £5. All films in the Craggan Room, Mar Lodge on Friday 10th February and Sat 11th February 7.30pm where there will be a licensed bar and refreshments available. More details on the NTS website.
