Summary

Beinn a'Chuallaich's position ensures it is a grand viewpoint, look out along Lochs Rannoch and Tummel. There are good stalkers paths up from the south - but no convenient place to park - so this circuit ascends from the hill road to the east.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There is space to park on the east side of the B847 road linking Strath Tummel with Trinafour, at NN707614. The great bulk of Schiehallion dominates the view from here, and remains in sight for most of the walk. Begin by heading through the gate in the deer fence opposite the parking area, and heading up the field parallel to the forest edge. Soon a small hut is passed, and a path leads up to a gate in the next fence. Pass through this then briefly follow an old path climbing up and across the hillside to the right.

Stage 2

After a short distance leave the path at a convenient point to climb more directly NW up the hillside. The ascent is steep initially but the gradient gradually eases and Beinn a'Chuallaich comes into view to the left - with its massive summit cairn visible. The most straightforward route is to aim to the west of Loch na Caillich - which is out of sight.

Stage 3

Climb up onto Meall nan Eun. There are very extensive views, with the Ben Alder massif dominating to the northwest, and the Drumochter hills to the north.

Stage 4

Follow the ridge round to the summit, which is marked by a trig point and a massive summit cairn just beyond. The views are excellent, particularly over Loch Rannoch to the west, with Loch Tummel leading the eye away to the east and Schiehallion towering between the two.

Stage 5

The quickest descent would be to retrace your steps, but a pleasant circuit can be made by descending the south ridge. This is broad and heathery, offering a gradual descent.

Stage 6

Once below Tom na Moire a stalkers' path cuts across the west side of the ridge and can be picked up for easier going. It passes through a gap in a tumbledown wall, and becomes much clearer a little further on where it bends sharply to the east.

Stage 7

The path makes a zig-zag descent, passing through a gate and descending to a pylon and then Drumglas cottage, with good views of Dunalasdair Water along the way. Pass through a gate immediately left of the cottage, then cross the pasture to reach a gate onto the road by the junction signs. Turn left up the B847 road for the walk back to the start point.
