Summary

The private tarmac road over the Lairig nan Lunn makes an ascent of Meall nan Subh one of the easier Corbetts, although the final slopes are rough, pathless and steep. The summit proves to be a fine viewpoint.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Park at the car park near the end of the road up Glen Lochay, around 600m east of Kenknock. Begin the walk by heading along the road to a cross-tracks at NN466364, then turn right onto the private road (closed to public vehicular traffic) that leads over to Loch Lyon.

Stage 2

The road climbs in a series of zigzags, with a badly potholed surface in places. Eventually the road straightens out for the much steadier final climb towards the top of the pass.

Stage 3

Leave the road just before a fence at NN451387 to begin the pathless and rough ascent of the hill itself. Pass under the power lines and then bear left through a gap beside a junction of fences. From here head north up a grassy gully and then steep heather slopes northeast head to the upper slopes.

Stage 4

Once onto the undulating plateau the terrain becomes knobbly, complex and confusing to navigate in poor visibility, Either head over the 795m false summit or bypass it on the south side to head up to the true highest point at 806m. From here there are grand views down into Glen Lyon.

Stage 5

The return is by the same outward route, enjoying some fine views down Glen Lochay on the zigzags.
