Summary

Cùl Beag is perhaps one of the less climbed of the strange, monolithic peaks of Coigach, but it is a hill of great character and a stunning viewpoint. The shortest ascent is from Linneraineach, but the longer eastern approach gives a gentler route.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There is a parking area opposite the southern end of the loop of old road, replaced by the modern A835. Begin by dropping down onto the section of old road - now a hard track - and follow it for almost 300m until an ATV track branches off to the left. Follow this as it leads to Lochan Fada, curving round the south end of the loch before continuing up the moorland to the west. There are excellent views of both Cul Beag and Cul Mòr .

Stage 2

When the path bends right (north) towards Loch nan Ealachan, a faint trod continues west over the moor. At one point it is necessary to step over a post-and-wire fence. It is possible to then aim to walk along the top of Creag Dhubh, or alternatively - and more direct - cut across its southern slopes, aiming for the foot of Meall Dearg.

Stage 3

The route now climbs steeply up heather - with traces of a path in places - up Meall Dearg, before levelling off into the undulating summit area, covered with sandstone outcrops. The summit now comes into view across the bealach holding Lochan Uaine.

Stage 4

Descend to the lochan - home to many frogs in the spring - and then begin the steep final climb, aided somewhat by the solifluction terraces formed by the freeze-thaw cycles of the ground. As the summit cairn comes into view there are stunning views to Stac Pollaidh.

Stage 5

The cairn is a spectacular viewpoint. An improbably steep path leads down the north side and provides an alternative approach and the possibility of a traverse of the hill.

Stage 6

If returning to the start it is necessary to instead retrace your steps. It is probably easier to head back over Meall Dearg rather than bypassing it on the boggy ground to the south.
