Park at the Loch Shiel car park at Polloch - at the very end of a long and tortuous road from Strontian. The walk begins along the track signed for Glenfinnan. This leads past a felled area and then the attractive pond near the outflow of the River Polloch.
The track climbs gently and a junction with two paths is reached just before a (usually open) barrier. Turn left onto the path with the footpath sign. This immediately reaches a t-junction; a detour left leads to a viewpoint over the outflow of River Polloch, whereas the walk continues to the right. It soon reaches a second junction - make sure you do take the detour to the left this time, signed for a viewpoint once more - it leads up to a picnic bench with stunning views over both Loch Shiel and the outflow of the Polloch.
Return to the main path which soon zig-zags downhill. Just before it reaches the track, turn left on a path to continue slightly downhill. The path soon swings right to continue a short distance above the shores of Loch Shiel.
The path runs through some beautiful native woodland, with oaks and birches. These are expanding now the exotic trees have been felled. The route leads past a floating pontoon for boats using the loch, and there are stunning views to the surrounding mountains.
After the pontoon the path reaches the track; go straight across onto a path opposite (photo shows the view looking back). This leads back to the path/track crossroads reached earlier. Turn left to retrace your steps back along the main track to Polloch.
