This straightforward walk from Moffat follows the wooded banks of the River Annan before returning back to the town along a quiet road.

The walk begins from the Glebe car park on the main A701 road into Moffat from the south - it is opposite Station Park, a lovely park with lake and pedalos. An information board in the car park gives details on many walking routes around the town. To begin this one, follow the path which heads upstream beside the River Annan; it is part of the Annandale Way - a long distance route that runs right through Annandale from the head of the river to the Solway Firth.
Soon a break in the trees on the right gives a view over the rooftops of Moffat towards Harfell beyond. Continue upstream by the river, ignoring a parking area and a path off to the town.
After another lovely wooded stretch of riverbank, ignore another path off to the right. Eventually two bridges over the Annan carrying the road to Edinburgh are reached; ignore a path right and instead pass underneath both bridges, following the orange waymarkers. The path surface becomes a little rougher from this point, and can be muddy after rains.
Keep right at a fork, diverging briefly from the river, and then go right again to pass through a kissing gate. Head across the field, below the line of telegraph poles, to emerge on a minor road. Turn right here to begin the walk back to Moffat; this was once the main road from the town to Edinburgh but is now merely a country byway. Soon the edge of town is reached. Moffat has many fine Victorian buildings dating from its heyday as a popular spa town. These days ended when the luxurious (and huge) Moffat Hydro hotel burnt down in 1921.
At the mini roundabout bear slightly left onto the main road. This leads past a church and soon continues into the High Street. Note the ram statue, and the town hall on the right which was originally a bath house. There are also several fine old coaching inns. Keep to the right side of the High Street, passing the Buccleuch Arms to leave the centre on the A701. This leads past St Andrew's Church to soon return to the Glebe car park.
