West Highland nature funds available

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has confirmed it has £20,000 available to support local projects in West Highland that benefit nature or encourage folk to enjoy it.

Community and voluntary groups, as well as individuals and organisations, are eligible to apply for help with projects that will achieve certain aims.

Examples include creating opportunities for people to appreciate and enjoy the outdoors, or to learn more about nature and landscapes; encouraging volunteering; and supporting community development.

Kristin Scott, SNH’s West Highland area manager, said: “West Highland has some of the most spectacular natural heritage in Scotland. We know how much local people value it and want to do their bit. We hope this fund will help enable some good local projects to go ahead this year.”

The grants can support small projects that will need to be completed before 31st March 2011. Grants can be to a maximum of £10,000 and match funding from other sources may be required. SNH’s West Highland area includes Skye & Lochalsh and Lochaber, including the Small Isles. The deadline for application is 12 November 2010.

More information is available from Stewart Sandison at SNH in Fort William on 01397 704716, or Stephen Varwell in Portree on 01478 613329.
