As the first snows fell on the Cairngorms, the highly successful Cairngorm Poo Project started its third year.
Previously, in the spring thaw months human waste would be found melting out of the snowbeds. This is not only unsightly and smelly but causes an increase risk of illness from contaminated snow. Last but by no means least, there is a significant impact on the local biodiversity and contamination of the nearby water courses.
Supported by TISO – The Outdoor Specialist, Cairngorms National Park Authority, Glenmore Lodge and Leader Plus, the Poo Project was setup in 2007 by former CairnGorm Mountain Ranger Heather Morning. to reduce the amount of human waste out on the high plateau areas by carrying waste back in special pots and carry bags, contents are then treated at the sewage treatment plant at Cairngorm – Coire Cas car park.
The Poo bags have been specially sourced for this project and are made from corn starch. These break up once in the treatment facility. The pots are reusable watertight and airtight containers which come with a carry pouch.CML’s treatment plant will only cope with biodegrable bags supplied from the Ranger Base. Any other type of bag will simply clogg the sewage system so it is important that the right bags are used.
The pots & bags are available from the Ranger Base at the Coire Cas Car Park. The treatment facility is situated below the lower Cas Car Park and is well signed. The Cairngorm Mountain Rangers ask that users return the pots and carrying pouches.
