£2.85m Heritage Lottery boost helps communities get closer to nature

Communities in the Cairngorms and Skye are celebrating major National Lottery investment which will see large areas of landscape along with many historic and natural attractions rejuvenated, celebrated and protected. Steall Falls path to be closed for at least a month; JMT calls for donations

Following the major rockfall on the popular Steall Gorge path on 13-14 September, the John Muir Trust has confirmed that the path will be closed for at least a month whilst specialist contractors repair the route. Local contractors will start work soon to make access safe again, by removing debris from the path, including loose and unstable boulders from the area above the path, and stabilising damaged trees. Helicopter drop assists in path repairs on Handa Island

More than 120 tonnes of stone and path-building materials have been airlifted by helicopter to a remote island to allow Scottish Wildlife Trust contractors and volunteers to repair the paths. The worn paths on Handa Island reserve off the west coast of Sutherland are being repaired to allow visitors to safely experience one of Europe’s most important seabird colonies and enjoy spectacular views from the island. Handa Island reserve is owned by Scourie Estate and managed in partnership with the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Large rockfall closes path up Nevis Gorge

Following a serious rockfall from the slopes above the Nevis Gorge overnight on 13-14 September, the John Muir Trust has closed the Steall Gorge path in the interests of public safety, pending remedial work, which could take between two and five weeks. Although the damage to path is less serious than initially feared, there is a significant amount of debris on the path, including large and unstable blocks of stone. Ben Lui walkers warned of quarry blasting on 8 September

Hillwalkers are being warned that major quarry blasting work will temporarily close the route to Ben Lui from Glen Lochy on Thursday 8 September. Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) says that there will be an organised quarry blast on the 8th September 2016. The precise location in Succoth near Dalmally can be seen on this map. It is expected to be carried out at approximately 12 noon, however there may be some variation between 11am and 1pm. Ruigh Aiteachain bothy closed for refurbishment

A major refurbishment of Ruigh Aiteachain bothy, in Glen Feshie, in the Cairngorms is now underway. This has been planned for some time and will see some big improvements to the bothy. The work is being undertaken by the Glen Feshie Estate and will involve a partial rebuilt of the building. As a consequence the bothy is now unavailable for use whilst work is carried out by professional contractors. The Estate hopes to have the bothy open again towards the end of September.

Helicopter warning for Sligachan footpath repair

Walkers are being warned that, weather permitting, helicopter lifts will take in place in Glen Sligachan on Skye. on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September as part of the John Muir Trust’s ongoing programme of path repairs. Following the first phase of restoration work on the Druim Hain path that was carried out last winter, phase two starts in September. Hillwalkers urged to check stalking information

Hillwalkers are once again being urged to check for possible deer stalking taking place on estates before heading out to the hills. With the stag stalking season underway up until 20th October, this helps reduce the chance of disturbing stag stalking during the peak season. Devil’s Elbow, Glenshee car park to close for month

A parking layby near the Devil’s Elbow on the A93 just south of Cairnwell is to be closed for improvement works from 25 July to 26 August. The site is marked a blue ‘P’ on the map below. Alternative parking will still be available on the north side of the road at at the Devil’s Elbow itself. The car park is sometimes used for the shorter route to Glas Maol and Creag Leacach. The car park will be landscaped, a new curved seat installed and the path toward the Munro stone pitched for a short section from the car park.

New waterbus opens up Loch Lomond islands

A new Waterbus route on Loch Lomond will open up new possibilities for visitors wanting to join up island visits and walking and cycling trips. The new route runs between Loch Lomond Shores in Balloch to Inchmurrin and then on to Inchcailloch, giving people the opportunity to explore two of Loch Lomond’s most popular islands. The Inchmurrin service includes a morning tea/coffee and scone, or soup and a sandwich at lunchtime, depending on what time you sail. This service, which began on 6 July, is run by Clyde Cruises, who join Cruise Loch Lomond, Sweeney’s Cruises and SS Sir Walter
