Walkhighlands/Mountaineering Scotland Navigation Courses

Following the success of the joint Walkhighlands/Mountaineering Scotland navigation courses over the last few years there will be a further 4 courses this summer. These single day courses will be held in the Lomond and Arrochar hills on 28 and 29 July based in Drymen and on 4 and 5 August based in Arrochar. This is the chance to brush up on your navigation skills while meeting other Walkhighlands users on a fun and friendly day. Cameron McNeish wins Mountain Culture Award

The well known hillwalker, broadcaster, author, broadcaster Cameron McNeish has won The Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture. The award – which is presented as part of the Fort William Mountain Film Festival – celebrates acheivements in the outdoors and promoting the “sprit of adventure”. Nominations are made by the public; previous winners have included Dr Adam Watson, Myrtle Simpson and Jimmy Marshall. Walkhighlands Walk & Write Workshop 10 March

Following the success of the last Walk and Write day in November, WalkHighlands has again teamed up with Linda Cracknell to offer another outdoor writing workshop. Mend our Mountains: Make One Million campaign comes to Scotland

Mountaineering Scotland and the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland (OATS) are leading a campaign to raise £100,000 to support two essential Scottish mountain path projects – joined by Walkhighlands as offical media partner. The path restoration projects are one in each of Scotland’s two National Parks, and are part of a GB-wide initiative, Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million, coordinated by the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) in collaboration with 15 National Parks. Noup Head photo on Walkhighlands inspires new Dundee V&A

A photograph taken by Phil Turner for Walkhighlands has been revealed as helping to inspire the design of the new V&A building in Dundee. The photograph was originally taken by Phil when researching the Walkhighlands route at Noup Head on Westray in the Orkney Islands. The internationally renowned architect of V&A Dundee – Kengo Kuma – revealed that the photograph helped inspire the building during a short documentary. Stalking information on Walkhighlands for new season

As Scotland’s deer stalking season gets into full swing, the web-based service to avoid conflict between walkers and stalkers has been relaunched. Scottish Natural Heritage’s ‘Heading for the Scottish Hills’ website allows walkers to check ahead for details of possible deer stalking taking place on estates where they plan to go walking. Walking now worth £1.26 billion to Scottish economy

Whether it’s wandering on one of 26 long-distance routes or bagging one of the country’s 282 impressive Munros, Scotland is renowned for its memorable walking opportunities with new figures revealing the market generates up to £1.26 billion to the Scottish economy. 100,000th member joins Walkhighlands

After passing it’s tenth birthday, the Walkhighlands community has now reached the milestone of 100,000 members. To celebrate the occasion we ran a competition on the forum for people to guess exactly when the 100,000th member would join. We’ve just added the 2,000th walking route to Walkhighlands – a milestone for the site. Having recently passed its 10th birthday, Walkhighlands has long been Scotland’s busiest outdoors website and is the most popular walking routes site in the UK.
