Glen Nevis temporary road closure

The road up Glen Nevis is due to close later this month, from 28th February to 3rd March. The closure is to enable a company to carry out filming. The closure will be from a point 700m beyond the Youth Hostel – affecting access to all of the very popular hill walks from the upper glen, as well as to Steall Falls. Cars will be allowed through only at set times on each day during the closure – at 10:30am for 15 minutes, from noon to 1pm, and at 3pm for 15 minutes. Outdoors community marks 20 years of Scottish access rights

Safety experts issue phone navigation advice

Following the results of a survey, Mountaineering Scotland have launched new guidance for those who use their phones, or GPS devices, for navigating in the hills. As part of the survey, some 4,000 hill users were asked if they used mobile phones or GPS for navigating when spending time in the hills and mountains, and if they had experienced any issues while doing this. A huge 87% of people said they used an electronic device for navigating at some point on their walk, and 40% of those said they had experienced a situation where their device had stopped working in

Conic Hill path closed until end March

The path up Conic Hill from Balmaha will be closed from today, Wednesday 11th January, until Friday 31st March.  The contractor has advised that site preparation will require the path to be closed ahead of the scheduled stone uplift next week.  The timber steps on the hill have been removed this week and as such, the path will be closed a few days earlier than planned. Conic Hill is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. New Cairngorms bothy open

A new bothy, Ruighe Ealasaid, The Red House has now been officially opened and is available for overnight stays. The bothy is situated in the southern Cairngorms, to the south of White Bridge, in a prime location for hillwalkers bagging the two Munros at the head of the Tarff. Beavers to be released at Loch Lomond nature reserve

NatureScot has today approved a licence application from RSPB Scotland to release a family of beavers at Aber Burn in the Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve (NNR). The decision marks the third new site approved for the release of beavers in Scotland, following the initial beaver reintroduction trial at Knapdale in Argyll and the release at Argaty, near Doune, last year. £100,000 awarded to Scottish mountain path project

The recipient of the Scottish Mountaineering Trust (SMT) 60th anniversary award was announced at the Dundee Mountain Film Festival on Saturday (26th November 2022), with the ambitious ‘It’s Up to Us’ campaign scooping the £100,000 Diamond Grant. Scottish Avalanche Forecasts to start 15 December

Recent snowfall in the hills means a standby avalanche forecast service will be provided from now on for the Lochaber and the North Cairngorms areas. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) will work with Met Office meteorologists to monitor future weather patterns. When significant blanket snow cover is likely to be present in the mountains SAIS avalanche forecasters will carry out field observations and produce public avalanche hazard reports.
