Scottish Avalanche information service forecasts stepping up

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service forecasts have already begun for Northern Cairngorms and Lochaber. From this Friday 10th December reports for all of the 6 operational areas of Lochaber, Glencoe, Creag Meagaidh, Southern Cairngorms , Northern Cairngorms and Torridon regions will be issued from daily.

As well as providing detailed daily forecasts which hillwalkers can use in combination with weather reports to plan their routes, the SAIS also maintains a record of avalanche activity across Scotland.

Hillwalkers and climbers are asked to report any avalanches they witness to the SAIS via the website where the daily reports can also be viewed.

Last year SAIS co-ordinator Mark Diggins answered questions on avalanches posed by Walkhighlands users – read it here.

Check out the Be Avalanche Aware website and phone app for lots of avalanche information for hillwalkers as well as the forecasts themselves.

You should always carry a backup means of navigation and not rely on a single phone, app or map. Walking can be dangerous and is done entirely at your own risk. Information is provided free of charge; it is every walker's responsibility to check it and to navigate safely.
