Summary

The northernmost summit of the great range which borders the eastern side of Assynt and runs over Conival to Breabag, Glas Bheinn receives comparatively little attention. It's ascent still provides a good walk in stunning surroundings.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Park at the car park near the Inchnadamph Hotel. The walk begins a short distance further north along the road; follow the A837 over its bridge over the River Trallgill and then turn right onto a private road. This leads past the independent hostel. Continue on the main track up the glen. Ignore a track off to the left and immediately afterwards and before the track crosses the Allt Poll an Droighinn turn left on a path marked with a very small cairn to head NW.

Stage 2

The path climbs easily, passing an old gate, and traversing above the river before heading north. Eventually it reaches a small makeshift shelter, it forks. Ignore the right branch (for Loch nan Cuaran) and instead continue ahead, passing to the left of a small lochan.

Stage 3

Eventually the path descends to reach the outflow of the larger Loch Fleodach Coire. The former bridge here has collapsed; stepping stones enable a crossing in dry conditions, otherwise the river may require a wade (dangerous in spate). After crossing the outflow there is a very boggy indistinct section before the path climbs northwards.

Stage 4

After gaining height the path curves left to climb across the slopes to eventually reach the Bealach na h-Uidhe. Here the route diverges from the Cape Wrath Trail which descends the far side; instead turn left to head up a short scree slope and gain the ridge leading up to Glas Bheinn.

Stage 5

The steep climb ends abruptly as a spacious plateau is reached, with areas of grass and stones. Looking down the steep ground to the right is Lochan a'Choire Ghuirm - the Loch of the Green Corrie made famous in Andrew Greig's book of that name. Continue over the plateau to reach the well-built summit cairn.

Stage 6

The views are good although the plateau reduces the depth; Quinag, close at hand, steals the show. It is possible to traverse the hill, but if returning to Inchnadamph it is more usual to retrace your steps.
