This short walk visits the remains of the 13th century Aros Castle - one of several castles that once guarded the shores of the Sound of Mull.

Good track by shore, return uses undulating woodland paths which can be very overgrown with bracken in high summer, in which can use outward route for return.
Pull in near phonebox and postbox south of Aros Bridge on A848.

Park considerately beside the A848 road south of Aros Bridge - there is space for a couple of cars to pull in near a post box and phonebox; do not block any passing spaces. Begin the walk by heading northwards on a path that leads down to the original stone bridge, now open to pedestrians only.
Turn right through the gateposts onto a track that passes several cottages and then continues along the attractive shores of Aros Bay. After around a kilometre you will see the ruins of Aros Castle high above you to the left; continue along the track, rounding the corner of the bay and passing a seat that looks over towards the mainland.
Just before some stone gateposts turn left onto a path through the trees, signed Aros Castle circular. The path climbs up to reach and pass through a gate. Beyond this, turn left across a children's play area to reach another gate giving access to the ruins of the castle. The grassy path beyond forks - take the left branch to detour to the ruins. Also known as Dounarwyse Castle, the ruins of Aros are in a poor state and there is a danger of falling masonry, as well as steep drops - so keep safetly away.
Return to the path fork and this time continue ahead. The path leads through a gate into the woods; soon it is joined by another path, and it continues downhill to reach a gate at the bottom of the wood. Pass through this to rejoin the outward route, and turn right along the track to retrace your steps back to the start.
