Croggan is one of the furthest-flung corners of Mull, reached along a truly tiny road along the southern shores of Loch Spelve. This short walk follows a track past the mouth of the loch to the lovely, secluded beach of Port nan Crullach.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Just before the phone box in Croggan there is space to park a couple of cars on the left; there are also alternative places on the verges near by though be careful not to block any passing spaces - there are few of them round here! There are great views across Loch Spelve towards the mountains of central Mull, with the dome of Beinn Talaidh prominent. Begin the walk by heading to the end of the public road and continuing along the track.

Stage 2

The track passes through some very beautiful native woodland right by the shores of the loch. Look out for a large boulder perched on a narrow plinth - looking like a mushroom - on the seaward side. When the track forks - and the wider branch goes right - continue ahead closer to the shore. Down to the left by the water is a ruined house, and the track crosses a bridge over a burn.

Stage 3

As the track passes the mouth of Loch Spelve at Rubha nan Sailthean the views open up across the sea, with the Argyll coastline clearly seen and the Isle of Scarba to the right. Continue for a further kilometre; there are a couple of very boggy sections on the track through these are short.

Stage 4

Look out for a sandy bay on the left - this is Port nan Crullach and the perfect destination for a short walk. The crescent of sand is almost unheard of and makes a great place for a picnic. Keep an eye out for seals - or perhaps even otters if you are lucky. After enjoying the beach, head back the same way.
