John o’ Groats Trail now on Walkhighlands

A new long distance trail linking Inverness and John o’ Groats has been developed and is now featured on Walkhighlands at this link: John o’ Groats Trail guide. The challenging route is 235.5km long and is split into 14 stages and there is accommodation and public transport at or near most of the stage ends. The Trail will provide a vital missing link for Land’s End to John o’ Groats walkers. The route was devised by Jay Wilson, who lives at Berriedale. Ben Dolphin named Ramblers Scotland president

Journalist, blogger, countryside ranger and Walkhighlands columnist Ben Dolphin has been named President of Ramblers Scotland, the representative body for Scottish walkers. He follows in the footsteps of the late conservationist Dick Balharry, award-winning broadcaster Cameron McNeish and most recently Dr Andrew Murray, who was the Scottish Government’s first Physical Activity Champion. Walkhighlands brings Google Streetview to Highlands’ walks

Stunning all-round imagery captured by Walkhighlands this summer has just been launched on Google Street View opening up some amazing Highland paths to virtual visitors. We hope that being able to see the routes on the screen will encourage people from far and wide to visit Scotland and also encourage Scots to tackle an iconic walk. Walkhighlands navigation course 6 August

A last minute cancellation means there are another 2 places available on the one day navigation course run by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland for Walkhighlands users on Saturday 6 August in the Ochils. The course will begin with an hour of work indoors and then the rest of the day will be spent on practical navigation skills on the hill. The course will be run by Heather Morning, Mountain Safety Officer at the MCofS and is aimed at anyone who wants to learn how to navigate for hillwalking or to brush up existing knowledge. Deaf-blind walker seeks guides for epic Scottish hike

Deaf and blind walker Michael Anderson will be tackling a 215 mile charity hike this May and is appealing for walkers to help him along the way. In 2011 Michael successfully tackled Ben Nevis with the help of some Walkhighlands users and is hoping hillwalkers will support both his trek and charity this time around. BBC2 to show Mountain Bothy documentary

A new documentary is to show on BBC2 Scotland on Wednesday, 9 December 2015 at 9pm, documenting the work of the Mountain Bothy Association and its volunteers. The film will subsequently be available on the iPlayer (and could be shown nationwide in the future). The film is entitled ‘Bothy Life’ and is a celebration of 50 years of the work of the Association. Filming by Hopscotch Films has taken place during much of this year.
