Castlebay and Ledaig shore

Summary

This short walk on minor roads and good paths heads east from Castlebay to a small headland overlooking the islet of Orasaigh. It has great views of the bay as well as a rocky shore to explore with a chance to watch seals and other wildlife.

Stage 1

From the Post Office in Castlebay near the ferry terminal walk up past the petrol station and tourist information office and turn right along the main road. From here there are good views down to Kisimul Castle which stands in the centre of the bay. The present day castle sits atop a rocky islet which having been blessed with a supply of fresh water and such a strategic position has long had a defensive fort on it. Kisimul was the home of the Macneil clan until it was abandoned in the mid 18th century. The castle fell into disrepair and the Macneil's lost control of Barra, although they later re-aquired the castle which was restored between 1956 and 1970 and is now managed by Scottish Heritage.

Stage 2

After passing the cycle hire shop, turn right on the small road signed for Ledaig. Keep right after crossing the burn and follow the road to the end. Go through the gate and follow the grassy track. This is a good place to watch the Calmac ferries coming and going from the jetty where they seem to dwarf the surroundings of Castlebay and Kisimul Castle.

Stage 3

Keep following the path as it heads around the shore with views ahead to Vatersay. As it rounds the headland the old harbour on neighbouring Orasaigh can be seen ahead. When the mast is reached turn right to follow the fence around onto the rocks in front of the mast. Here is a great spot to watch the passing wildlife, seals, otters and seabirds are often seen. It is also a good place for rockpooling at low tide.

Stage 4

Return by the same outward path. At sunset the view back over Castlebay can be particularly spectacular.
