Gear review: Berghaus Fast Hike Trousers

Recommended Price: £95
Weight: 320g

I’ve been testing these lightweight trousers over the last three months. Whilst they are not the lightest I’ve worn, they seem extremely robust – showing not even the slightest signs of wear so far; the very lightest trousers are likely to wear out much faster. The Fast Hike Trousers are well tailored and not cut as baggy as many walking trousers – so do try them on to ensure you don’t end up with a pair too tight on the thighs; they are available in mens and womens and a variety of lengths as well as waist sizes.

Made from nylon, they have articulated panels on the knees and double-weave stretch fabric in key areas; they also have a water resistant coating (good for light showers), are pretty quick to dry and I’ve found them to offer a good level of wind resistance. There are four pockets – two handwarmers, plus a pocket on the back and one on the thigh; I never find it particularly comforable to use rear or thigh pockets when out walking and would be happier with a slightly simpler design without these. They also have an integrated, partly concealed belt – a very welcome inclusion when so many walking trousers lack a belt which really ought to be included given their prices. Finally, they have two way vents on the legs, which helps ensure that these are very practical trousers to wear on hikes in all seasons.
