The Flashpoint 2 is a truly ultralight waterproof jacket. Weighing in at just 185g in men’s size large, the jacket squashes into a tiny stuff sack and is barely noticeable in your pack; runners could even simply attach it to a belt. So where are the compromises?
The fabric is 3 layer Pertex Shield. I’ve found it to be surprisingly breathable, and it also seems pretty robust for the weight. I’m sure these qualities are partly down to it having 3 layer construction – I typically find 2 and 2 and half layer waterproofs feel more clammy when the rain is pouring down.
Even more surprising is that the jacket is quite fully featured. The hood is large and helmet compatible, adjustable and has a slightly stiffened peak – far superior to what I’d expected on such a light jacket. The cuffs are also adjustable with velcro, there are two zipped front pockets and the waterproof zip is backed by a storm flap to help keep water out. I found that the zip can easily jam on this flap, but with a little care when zipping up this is easily avoided once you are aware of it.
Whilst it may be slightly less breathable than Goretex Pro or eVent, I’ve found the Flashpoint 2 to be a superb performer for the super lightweight and tiny pack size. It’s sure to be an attractive choice for backpackers, hill runners or those just wanting the lightest possible summer pack.
